Dates

From soft and sticky to firmer and chewy, dates vary with variety and processing. Their sweetness can carry a dish in small amounts.

Character

Soft sweetness. Rich texture.

Forms

Whole, pitted or chopped

Choose with purpose

Match the cut and preparation to your intended use.

At home in the kitchen

Chop dates into porridge or a baked dish, or pair a small amount with a savoury meal. Check for pits even in products labelled pitted before blending or serving.

What to look for

Ask about variety, moisture, pit removal and added coatings. Dried fruit contains concentrated sugars; enjoy it as part of a meal. A naturally sweet ingredient is still a source of sugar.
