Make a Better Dry Fruit and Seed Mix

The best dry fruit and seed mix is not necessarily the one with the longest ingredient list. It is the one where a chewy piece of fruit, a crisp seed, and a familiar dry fruit each have room to be noticed.

Start with texture

Choose one or two dry fruits and one or two seeds, then think about how their textures will sit together. If the fruit pieces are large, cutting them into smaller pieces can make each handful easier to eat and distribute them more evenly through the mix.

Toast only if you like

Seeds can be used as they are, or briefly toasted in a dry pan if you prefer a warmer, more pronounced flavour. Keep the heat moderate, stir frequently, and take them off the pan as soon as they smell fragrant; they can continue to darken from the pan’s residual heat.

Keep the batch dry

If you toast seeds, let them cool completely before combining or storing them. Warm ingredients can create condensation in a closed container, so mixing them while they are still warm can undo the care you took to keep the batch dry.

Make a small amount first and adjust the balance after tasting it. If you are packing the mix ahead, use a clean, dry, airtight container and follow the storage guidance on each product’s package.
