A simple storage routine makes it easier to keep track of dry fruits and seeds in your kitchen. Begin with the instructions on the original packaging: different products and preparation methods may need different storage conditions.

Start with a clean, dry container

If you transfer the contents, use a food-safe container that is clean and completely dry. Keep the original label or note the ingredients, allergens, best-before date and instructions for use after opening. Close the lid after each use.

Choose a suitable place

Away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture is a useful starting point for shelf-stable packs. If the label asks for refrigeration after opening, follow that direction. Keep containers away from steam near a cooker or kettle.

Label and rotate

Write the opening date on the pack or container. Use older packs first, and avoid mixing a new batch into an older one. Buy quantities that suit your household rather than leaving a large opened pack unused for a long time.

Check before using

Do not use products with visible mould, damaged packaging or an unusual smell. When in doubt about a product, follow its manufacturer’s guidance. Explore our dry fruits guide and seeds guide for ideas on using different varieties.
